Leathery Polypody, Polypodium scouleri

FERN LORE:  Along the Washington coast P. scouleri can be locally abundant, growing in large colonies on alders and among the rocks just above the spray zone.

CULTIVATION:  This fern does surprisingly well in the ground in the Puget Sound region, given that on the coast it is always found in the trees or high on rock faces.  There may be cases of it growing on the ground natually, but I haven't found or heard of any.  Potted in my leaf duff and gravel soil it was content.  However, after I accidently shattered the pot,  I set the root mass back in the drip pan and poured in a bit of water to keep it wet until I could repot it.  A week later it was putting up two big fronds with more on the way.  I have since left it in this situation, with exposed roots, and it is happier than ever.

The thumbnail to the left shows a typical thriving P. scouleri on the coast at Pt. of the Arches.
