Cyathea cooperi

FERN LORE:  Native to Australia, this tree fern grows fast and large, with fronds reaching eight feet in length..  It has naturalized in Hawaii and is a major problem there.  It is hardy to Zone 6, but with help can over-winter up to Zone 8.

CULTIVATION:   As can be seen by the picture at right, I've had good luck growing this fern in my apartment.  It faces a sunny east window here in Seattle.  I fertilize it with sparrow and goose droppings to very good effect.  It likes lots of water.  On hot days with lots of sun, it is critical to keep it very wet otherwise it will burn.  This plant is three years old, with fronds about six feet long.  The front in the middle right looks foreshortened because it is on a level with the camera.  It isn't, however stunted fronds will occur if the fern isn't kept adequately fertilized.  Each winter I turn it so that the trunk doesn't end up leaning in one direction.  It is said to be easy to grow from spore.

This fern is my joy.  It is the center piece of my studio apartment, and more than anything else, makes my home a place I can love to live in.  To photograph it I put it against a wall, but normally it lives in the middle of the room near the windows.  I like to lay on the couch and gaze up at it.
